The volumetric weight of a shipment is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. A less dense item generally occupies more volume of space, in comparison to its actual weight. Volumetric weight can be calculated by multiplying the length, width and height of a parcel and dividing that figure either by 4000, 5000 or 6000. Once the volumetric weight has been calculated, the carriers will use the higher of the two weights to calculate the shipping costs.
Luckily most carriers are now standardising the volumetric weight calculation and only using the shipping factor of 5000.
